Photo Shoot of a Nursing Cat
73
Suri is my mother's cat but she is very fond of me. We are raising Suri's family for ten years. When Suri's daughter, also called Suri, gave birth for the first time I decided to shoot her. Suri, we have now, is in the third generation.
Suri's profile
In May, 2001, Suri was just one month old when my mother brought her in our home. For many years we had no pets, so Suri was pampered to no ends. We fed her milk, butter and steamed-rice mixed with milk. Sometimes we give her a treat with rice pudding and cakes. She was about six months old when I saw her coming out of the attic with a rat still struggling between her teeth. She dropped the injured rodent on the floor and started playing football.
Suri was 13 months old when she became pregnant. Couple of months later she gave birth to four kittens. But unfortunately all were killed by a stray cat. He-cats find strange fascination in biting the kittens.
Second time when Suri gave birth I did not see the kittens until Suri carried them to our house. This time she had learnt the lesson about being secretive. As the kittens grew, Suri developed strange hatred towards her kittens. For days she would be away. And one day we found, Suri had actually abandoned us. Amongst the three kittens only one lived with us, while other two both males ran away. And this kitten was again called Suri.
Interestingly, this new Suri also showed the same behavioral pattern. Suri we have at the moment is granddaughter of our Suri, who ran away from us. And I’m worrying if this one also leaves us after she delivers her babies.
Photo shoot
One evening when Suri was struggling to walk, my mother announced, Suri will give birth tonight. I did not believe mother, she had been saying the same thing since couple of days. The other day when Suri came to me, I saw her loosened belly.
We gave her a treat of rice pudding. I was very eager to see her kittens but I could not find them anywhere. Two days later when I saw Suri on the roof of our animal shed, I climbed the attic. But Suri snarled when she spotted me. Next time I went to see Suri and her kittens, she had already shifted.
A week later, I saw Suri in the garret of our outhouse. Despite my mother's warning that once Suri knows I know her place she will move her kittens, I went to Suri with buttered-milk. Kittens hid behind the log and Suri stared at me for a while but then she walked towards me and licked milk. For two days I familiarized with Suri.
The Kittens were three weeks old when I decided to shoot them.
Observation
When Suri gave birth to three kittens, I found some interesting feline behavioral patterns.
1. Cats are very secretive about giving birth. They are very choosy about their labor room. I did not know Suri had already given birth until I saw her empty belly. Suri had chosen her delivery place in the attic of our animal shed.
2. Cats are very possessive about their kittens. They hardly let you come near. Suri is very fond of me but when I went to see her kittens she snarled. But couple of hours later when she came out of her place, there was no trace of her belligerence.
3. Cats do not like to show their babies. The new mother constantly changes her hiding place. I knew where the kittens are only two days later. Two days later, when I went to see the kittens, Suri had already sifted her place.
4. Mother cats are very active, they start hunting rodents. Suri was lazy girl but after her delivering kittens, she had developed a passion for game. She could wait for hours at the mouth of a rat hole.
5. Kittens eyes are opened after couple of days. But once they can spot the things around, they snarl when they think a danger is before them. Suri's children were so cute but when I tried to touch them they growled.
6. Male cats are independent in nature and most of the time they do not stay in their mother’s house.

Nice story and cool pictures.
Awesome hub and the photographs are so beautiful. Many thanks for sharing.
She is one big cat! You are right, cats are secretive at places they are giving birth. My cat gave birth in my grandma closet. The next morning she wake up, she sees kitten...I vote up and useful! Thanks for sharing! :)
Its nature. Mother cats do first if all protect their kittens, and once they grow up and become strong they leave home so to speak and start fending for themselves, or the mother just leaves them as you say.
My cat Lilly was mine and my moms, I got her knowing Mom would keep her and she could be mine too. She was weird with her first kittens, tired of them fast and the second liter she got really mean with so Mom and Dad had her fixed and Mom and Dad are now gone and I still have Lilly, she will be 17 in Feb. She does not look old and she has become more gentle with age. Those kittens in your picture look awfully big to be nursing, I don't think I ever saw any that big nurse.
...well this is a most wonderful cat story (and pictures) from a most wonderful person, hubber and writer - that's you!!!! The cat in my picture was my mum's cat - she is Little Miss Tiffy and is about 15 years and I have anothe cat whom I adopted - his name is Mister Gabriel - he is all white and is deaf - they're my two best friends.

Gorgeous photos and a fascinating story.
The many lives of a cat named Suri. I enjoyed the story and information about cats. Didn't know all these before. I found this pretty fascinating. Voted beautiful and awesome. Thanks with lots of love
I love cats and enjoyed your story of Suri, although saddened that only one of her babies survived... Cats are awesome and they do have their instincts about certain things, especially when they are on their own without the resources that we provide! Voted up and interesting!
What a great story and well written, but sad. You feel all these different emotions in this aerticle. Love the story of Suri and how you explained lie for cats. Voted up.
Hi Vinaya. I am very glad that your mother and you love cats and have taken in mother cats who have kittens. Mostly, if the mother is familiar with her home and feels safe and secure; she will allow her familiar humans to visit. It's sad that the first Suri and her descendents have the trait of abandonment or fear. This must be a result of having been feral at one time. You are doing well to continue to nurture both mother and kittens. These poor animals need all the help they can get and you and your lovely mother are doing your best. Thank you for sweet pictures of beautiful kitties.
Thank you for sharing your photo shoot of Suri and her kittens, they are great photos and a well written story, thank you for sharing.
Voting up, best wishes MM
Loved to read this article on suri...You reminded me of my childhood when one of the cat gave birth to the kittens in the corner of our storeroom and my mum was angry because she had to clean up the area.. lol. I also remember my mum saying that cats change 9 different place after they give birth to their kittens, I wonder whether that is true or not?... Voted up!
A sad story of nature and its kinks. But glad you tried to care for all the cats anyway!
The photos alone--picture perfect...

How sad that the mothers abandoned their kittens and that most didn't survive. Thanks for sharing this story and the beautiful photographs.
